Dreams Tulum

Tulum is a beautiful destination.  It is about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half south of Cancun’s International Airport (CUN).  It is well worth the hike, as the beaches are beautiful.  The Tulum Ruins are also worth a visit, but make sure to come early to avoid the long lines of tourists as well as the heat.  Ok…below are some photos of the resort.  A review will follow.  Enjoy.  Back to Mexican Resorts. Dreams Tulum is an excellent family-friendly, all-inclusive, beachfront resort set on a lovely stretch… Read More

Mayan Meals, Games to the Death and More

Mayans had meals that may not be appealing to many of us in some ways, though they ate things that we would eat today, like fruit, cornmeal, corn.  They would also eat rabbit or turkey as well as soup and beans.  Even chocolate.  Sounds pretty yummy, right? Hey, they even ate tacos. Did I mention the tacos were bug tacos? Did you throw up or lick your lips in anticipation? You may want to skip this paragraph, or maybe you want to grab a notebook and pencil so you can jot down some… Read More

Tulum

On Friday, we decided to go to a resort in Tulum for Kathryn’s birthday. We were first going to see the World Famous ruins of Tulum, so we took the ADO to Tulum, from Playa Del Carmen. We asked the lady at the desk how long it would take to get to the ruins of Tulum, and she told us not more than twenty minutes, walking. I don’t think the lady liked us very much, because it took over an hour to get there, and we all had forgotten to bring water… Read More

Katie’s Birthday Mexican Style!

Kathryn turned 11 this past week.  What a joy!  She is the first to celebrate a birthday since we left home two months ago, so we wanted to make sure it was special.  We knew it would be hard, being away from all of her friends and family. But…we were not alone.  Our teachers from Spanish Joyfully joined us in our celebration.  They shared our festivities with a fruit-filled Piñata (thanks, Katya), homemade ice cream cake/tort (gracias, Isabel), and empanadas (stuffed, fried pastries, muchas gracias,  Annabella). Katie was completely surprised!  She went first to… Read More

Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun

Photos first and then our review/thoughts on Secrets Silversands.  Make sure to scroll all the way down to the bottom!  Back to Mexican Resorts. Secrets Silversands is a lovely, adults-only, beachfront, all-inclusive resort just north of Puerto Morelos.  It is close enough to both Cancun and Playa del Carmen for the adventurous traveler who likes to get off property and explore the surrounding areas and towns.  One great thing about this all-inclusive resort?  No wristbands! Size:  Secrets Silversands offers 433 luxurious suites.   That said, I would not describe it as a… Read More

The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful

Living in Mexico has been very different than living back in Chicago.  While it has been very hot and humid, with occasional homesickness, this has been a time of learning, serving, trying new things, and building relationships. Since we moved in, we have experienced so much.  We have met many wonderful people, visited a few luxurious resorts, attempted to learn Spanish  (),  snorkeled with turtles and sting rays, and visited ancient ruins.  I love the people at our church; they feel like family.  The resorts we have gone to have been really… Read More

Azul Sensatori Puerto Morelos

Family-friendly beach resort.  Photos first and then our thoughts/reviews below.  Back to Mexican Resorts. Azul Sensatori:  Fact Sheet Azul Sensatori is a family-friendly active beachfront resort with about 435 suites.  It is located about fifteen to twenty minutes south of the Cancun International Airport.  While it says it’s in Puerto Morelos, please note that the resort actually sits just north of the small town of Puerto Morelos, next to the Secrets Silversands Resort.  This resort is part of the Karisma chain of properties that offers “gourmet inclusive” vacations.  Since the Karisma Resorts are pretty… Read More

Akumal with Ryan

Yesterday, we drove down to Akumal, which is south of where we are living right now.  There, we met up with some of our friends from our church and snorkeled with them. This place is very famous for it’s endangered green sea turtles, which, yes, we did see. These sea turtles usually live in warm, tropical water, and are overly hunted. That is why laws now protect these turtles, and why they are on the list of “endangered species.” The sea turtles ranged from almost smaller than my head, to larger than… Read More

Generations Riviera Maya

A picture paints a thousand words,  so photos first, reviews later.  Back to Mexican Resorts. Generations Riviera Maya:  Generations Riviera Maya is a new resort built right next to El Dorado Casitas Royale.  It is also a part of the Karisma Chain, but offers an upscale option for friends and families with children.  This family-friendly beachfront all-suite, all-butler resort is located about thirty minutes south of Cancun International Airport.  Playa del Carmen sits about twenty-five minutes further south of the resort as well, so day trips to either Cancun or Playa are… Read More

Swimming with Turtles in Akumal!

When the Green Sea Turtle is born it is only about 5 cm long.  However they can grow up to 1.5 meters.  They can also be 700 pounds which makes them the largest hard shell turtle!  Under their shell they are  yellow.  They also get their name from the greenness of their bodies. Green sea turtles can hold their breath for several hours at a time.  Because they are cold blooded reptiles in cold water it is easier to hold their breath for a long time in cold water. On land, the sea turtles… Read More
