Casas Del Bosque

While Chile in the past was known for it’s decent wines and value, a lot of things have changed drastically over the last few decades.  Chile is now known for some spectacular options, offering more complexity, flavors, and uniqueness with a focus on quality.  They are delicious and yet remain a really good value.

We had the opportunity to visit one of the finest wineries in all of Chile, Viña Casas del Bosque.  It is located about 40 miles from Santiago, the Capital of Chile, in the heart of Casablanca Valley.  It was very doable on a day trip out, after spending the morning in Viña del Mar and Valparaiso.  We spent a few hours there, touring the winery and then doing a wonderful wine tasting.  Here are a few photos from our day at Casas del Bosque.

On arrival, we were warmly greeted and given a tour of the winery first. First stop…the vines!

There were pretty roses all around the vineyard and we thought they were purely there for their beauty.  We were wrong.  We were taught that while both vines and roses are susceptible to fungus and insects, roses are even more susceptible.  Having them present among the vines serves as an early warning that precautions need to be taken.  I never knew that.

Next, we headed to the Barrel Room.

And last but not least, our wine educator lead us through an informative delicious tasting.  She first had us smell, swish, and taste each wine, asking what we thought we tasted.

It was amazing how many different flavors and fruits we thought we were sampling.  She only then described each wine after we’d tasted and guessed.  Sometimes we got it right, other times we were way off, but once she told us, it was easier to identify each hidden flavor.  Here are a few flavors I remember:  White Peach, White Pepper, Nectarine, Almonds, Walnuts, Coffee, and Chocolate.  I know there were berries and other fruit, but unfortunately, I can not remember them all.  I only remember being awed by the complexity of each wine!

Along with the wines, they offered a selection of tempting cheeses, each option pairing well with a particular wine, as well as some vegetables and fruit.  It was one of the best wine tasting experiences we’ve ever had!

Just a few more shots of this fantastic winery.

And of course, our fun driver and guide!

Thanks to all who helped us put this trip together and make it so special.
