Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Maya
August 2016: Updated photos from our most recent visit: This July and August, we spent a full week at Secrets Maroma and just loved it! From the most stunning, white sand beach to the exquisite dining, it is now one of my favorite resorts in all of the Riviera Maya and Cancun area.
Here is a quick synopsis: This is a lovely, active, fun resort set on one of the most gorgeous beaches in all of Mexico. It is laid back and relaxed, but also offers an active, energetic vibe. The dining is outstanding (please see my photos below), the rooms are lovely and comfortable, and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel at home. This resort is ideal for couples and small groups looking for a relaxing, upscale getaway. Here are a few photos from our stay.

The Dining:
Oct. 24, 2014: Secrets Maroma is a wonderful adults only resort option. It is set on one of the most gorgeous stretch of soft, sandy beach in the Riviera Maya and offers pools, beach activities, fine dining, and so much more. I’ve visited this property twice, but only one hour each time, and we have never eaten or stayed here over night, so do keep that in mind as you read my thoughts. As usual, my photos are first, and my review will follow. Enjoy. Back to Mexican Resorts.

Secrets Maroma is a contemporary, adults-only, beachfront, all-inclusive resort just located between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. It is close enough to both Cancun and Playa del Carmen for the adventurous traveler who likes to get off property and explore the surrounding areas and towns. One great thing about this all-inclusive resort and its sister properties? No wristbands or dining reservations required!
Size: Secrets Maroma offers 412 suites, several with swim out suites. The resort is rather compact, and buildings are four stories high, making the resort very easy to navigate. We visited the resort when it was about 93% full, and surprisingly enough, it did not feel overwhelming or crowded. There were definitely a lot of guests present, but there was space enough for everyone.
Star Level: I would consider this resort a solid 4 star resort, based on my observances and minimal staff interaction.
Category: I would best describe this resort as a lively, active resort with fun daily options. Though active, it was not over the top loud, so it seemed easy to relax. There were a lot of great hang out spots by the beach, near the pools, in the lobby, and even in the areas between the buildings. See the photos above for tables, chairs, and swinging chairs hanging above a few inches of water. Though all adults are welcome, a majority of guests were couples and honeymooners, so keep that in mind.
Beach: Maybe I’m a bit biased, but all of the resorts that sit along Maroma Beach are extremely fortunate, as Maroma Beach is one of the finest beaches in all of Riviera Maya. It is soft, powdery, wide, and stretches in both directions for a while. An ideal beach and very swimmable.
Rooms: The rooms at Secrets Maroma are contemporary, colorful, and comfortable. See the above photos for room colors, layout, and balcony configurations. If you’re looking for an extra level of comfort and/or amenities, choose the Preferred Club category. And if you are a honeymooner, be sure to choose the Preferred Club, as there are many valuable offerings that come with this category. Of course, they change over time, but currently, honeymooners booking a certain number of days are gifted with 2 free nights on a return anniversary stay, a complimentary massage, early and later check out, and more.
Activities: This resort offers many of the activities its sister resorts offer, like non motorized water sports, a theatre and game area, a fitness center and more. You may also be offered complimentary green fees at the Grand Coral Riviera Maya Golf Club, but you will be responsible for cart and club rental fees. You may also have to pay an additional fee if you want to reserve a specific time.
Nightlife: I imagine the night life at this resort is similar to Secrets Silversands and Secrets the Vine, but since we were not here in the evening, it would hardly be fair for me to comment on it.
Dining: Again, we have not eaten at this restaurant, so I can not comment on the quality of food. What I can tell you is that Secrets Maroma has six a la carte gourmet restaurants, a buffet open throughout the day, the infamous Coco Cafe which our family has come to love, and 24 hour room service.
Overall: This is a very nice resort. The main lobby is open and spacious, very elegant. The buildings and rooms look well maintained and are cared for carefully. The pool areas are clean and offer a lot of seating. The only downside to this resort (in my opinion) is that the external grounds, specifically the large common areas in between the buildings, seemed to lack any color and creativity. It felt uninspiring to me. But other than that, we would feel comfortable recommending this resort, especially because of Maroma Beach!
(2016 Update – After having stayed here for a week this month, I would have to say I disagree with my earlier assessment of “uninspiring”. Either we hadn’t had enough time to experience the resort or it has changed, but we now consider it one of our favorite resorts!)
