Ghent, Belgium – Day 3

After a few days spent exploring the fairytale medieval city of Bruges, we decided to visit a different Belgian City. We hopped on the train for a day trip this morning from Bruges to the lesser known university town of Ghent, a short 22 – 27 minute trip. Ghent is the smaller but equally beautiful sister city of Bruges.

Gorgeous Ghent. Even on a cloudy rainy day, it is gorgeous! As we were planning our trip to Belgium, we were really split on the decision of where to stay, as both Bruges and Ghent seemed like great choices. In the end we chose Bruges, as we had clients scheduled to arrive shortly after we departed, and really wanted to get to know the city prior to their arrival. But while there, we knew we also had to visit Ghent, so we could enjoy them both and learn more about their similarities and/or their differences.

The two cities, of course, are beautiful. They both have canals which offer wonderful boat trips throughout the city, offering a great perspective from the water. And while Bruges is extraordinarily picturesque, Ghent can hold its own. pretty well.

One thing that made Ghent fascinating to us were the Castles and Cathedrals, in addition to the Canals we just discussed. Here is the interior of a particularly beautiful Cathedral, Saint Bavos.

The sculptures were particularly detailed and beautiful.

And the castle! It is such an imposing structure in the heart of Ghent.

Ghent is best known for it’s medieval architecture with highlights like Gravensteen Castle and St. Bavos Cathedral. It’s small enough that it can be visited in one day from Bruges or Brussels. While it’s not a completely pedestrian city, as buses, trams, and bicycles are heavily used, Ghent is easily walkable and a great way to explore.

The above is actually one of the most attractive bridges I’ve seen with the most unique views! And just a few more lovely shots of Ghent in the rain.

If you’re a Street Art fan, be sure to visit Graffiti Alley in Ghent – where the only rule is that you respect the artwork of those that are better than you.

Just a few last shots before leaving Ghent. For my Foodie Friends, note the Whipped Cream Topped Cappuccino (WOW) and the Cream and Carmel Topped Belgian (Brussels) Waffle! The latter was good, but to be perfectly honest, it did not compare to the Leige Waffles we had in Brussels with our friends! We had no idea there was a difference in waffles. We’ll be on the search for the Liege Waffles today. There’s something about the way they’re made – with pearl sugar mixed right in, that make them quite amazing!

Well, I could go on but will stop for now. At the end of the day, we returned to Bruges but later on planned to visit Ghent while on our river cruise. So…more about that later.
