Jungfrau, Switzerland – Day 7
Day 7: On day seven, we transferred from breathtaking Zermatt to the majestic Jungfrau Region – going from one beautiful location to the other. I’ve seen photos for years, and we even visited Switzerland in 2015, but our time in this region was extremely short, as we just did a day trip.
Ever since then, I’ve wanted to return and explore the area. I’m so glad we took the time to return. Today, I’ll mostly be sharing photos, as I think they speak for themselves.
For our visit to the Jungfrau Region, we chose Interlaken as our base. This town connects very easily to other European cities, and is also a perfect location to enjoy a bit of luxury while also having easy access to the surrounding towns and villages.
This afternoon, we met with Matteo, our Interlaken guide, who showed us this gorgeous city through his eyes! First we strolled through the streets and along the bluest river. It was extraordinarily vibrant. Tell me this isn’t one of the most beautiful rivers you’ve ever seen?!
There are hotels, shops, and restaurants all along the main streets, and you can always see views of the beautiful river running through this town.
Next, we ascended the Harder Klum Funicular, an extremely steep tunnel carved through the mountain to the top. The Funicular was a short 10-minute walk from our hotel, so very easy to access. We boarded and rode to the very top, where we were rewarded with some of the most amazing views of Lakes Brienz and Thun, as well as the surrounding mountains. And just to note, ascending and descending the funicular also offered the most brilliant ever-changing views of the town and its imposing mountain ranges. I was afraid to close my eyes or look away for fear of missing yet another gorgeous perspective as we rose or descended.
Once we reached the top, there is a viewing platform that hangs out over the edge of the cliff. From here, Lake Brienz is visible in one direction, Lake Thun on the other. Surrounding everything are the magnificent, jagged, snow capped Swiss Alps and the infamous Jungfrau in the distance! We could see for miles around – the visibility was incredible that day.
We decided to stay on top of the mountain and enjoy the views for a bit longer than we initially planned, because the views were unexpectedly incredible. We also took a little time to dine at the mountaintop café and restaurant, just to prolong our time in the beauty. Another quick note. The food at the top of the mountain is decent, but nothing too special. It’s all about the views! I’d save my appetite to dine in town later.
Just look at the scenery. Simply breathtaking.
