Prague Castle and Lesser Town

Waking up in Prague is exhilarating. There’s something about knowing you’re about to walk through centuries of history that makes it hard to stay in bed, especially when that history is as breathtakingly beautiful as Prague.

Discovering Prague’s Layers

Each day took us deeper into the city’s story. We started in Lesser Town (Malá Strana), where narrow streets wind through pastel townhouses, hidden gardens, and centuries-old churches.

Climbing up to Prague Castle was like walking through a living history book.

The views from the top, red rooftops tumbling down to the river, were worth every step. I don’t think these views ever get old.

We arrived just in time for the Changing of the Guards, which was fun to watch, full of ceremony and a little bit of pageantry.

Prague Castle is one of those places that surprises you with how big it is. It’s not just a single building but an entire complex. I loved how every corner looked a little different. A little Gothic here, a lot of Baroque there, and a ton of fascinating details carved into every stone, if you were patient enough to just stop and observe.

Standing in front of St. Vitus Cathedral, it’s impossible not to think about how much history has happened right where you’re standing. There’s something grounding about being in a place that’s been the heart of Prague for over a thousand years.

As we left Prague Castle, we were treated to unexpected, sweeping views of the Strahov Monastery. We’d seen it before when visiting the Strahov Library. From this perspective, however, its size and scale were completely striking; we hadn’t realized just how massive it really is.

As we made our way back into town, it hit me how much history is packed into every street, building, and courtyard here in Prague. You can wander through centuries in just a few hours. One moment you’re exploring grand palaces and cathedrals, the next ducking into quiet alleyways and charming cafes. This makes Prague feel alive. It’s exactly why I could spend days just exploring this amazing city, always discovering something new around every corner. I really do love this city!

Just a few quick tips:

  1. Try to visit early in the day or much later in the afternoon, if you want to minimize crowds.
  2. Make sure to ditch the heels and wear super comfortable shoes!
  3. Make sure to build in enough time to wander and take in all the details. It’s so beautiful.
  4. Bring a small backpack for water and some snacks. You may be stopped at the entrance, but security is light.
  5. Make sure to take in the views while you’re here! They really are stunning.
