Lauterbrunnen – Day 8

Day 8: Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, and the surrounding mountain towns.

This morning we spent exploring the gorgeous mountain villages scattered throughout the Jungfrau Region. You have the option to take a private fully guided tour, which is an amazing and stress-free experience. For those who would prefer a more independent adventure, there is also an extensive transportation network including buses, trains, cable cars, funicular, etc. While you may have to transfer several times, and combine different modes of transport, it is well worth it it you have several days in this area. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to take it all in.

As I mentioned in my previous Interlaken blog post, this is a day I have been anticipating ever since May, 2015 when we last visited. I was blown away the first time around, as we pulled into the town of Lauterbrunnen for the day because in the backdrop of this beautiful town was a gorgeous cascading waterfall. I couldn’t believe how splendid it was.

I kept glancing around, sure I would catch the eye of others appreciating this astounding site as much as I was, but apparently this seemed mundane and familiar for locals and tourists alike. They were already accustomed to the grandeur. I can’t say I ever got to that point, and even looking through my photos, I’m still mesmerized. I’ve dreamt of returning ever since. Please tell me I’m not alone!

The fascinating fact about the Lauterbrunnen area is that it is quite easily one of the most picturesque landscapes in the whole world, Spring, Winter, Summer, or Fall. Dramatic cliffs with no less than 72 plunging waterfalls are interspersed throughout the lush, alpine valley during the warmer seasons.

From this area, visitors can access scenic hiking trails that lead to stunning views. And a quick train ride to a different village opens up so many more hiking options. The choices are endless.

Alternately, you may want to go in search of the many waterfalls in this area, along with stunning and sometimes hidden vantage points where a true photographer at heart would be in heaven.

Just start walking…in all directions. You will be surrounded with beauty no matter where you go. Being a nature lover as well as a photographer, I could easily lose myself in this area for several weeks and still feel like I didn’t have enough time to explore.
