Rome Highlights – The Spanish Steps and All Things Vatican
There’s no place quite like Rome. It’s a city where ancient ruins sit beside buzzing cafes, where centuries-old churches hide masterpieces, and where every cobblestone feels like it has a secret to share. One minute you’re tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, the next you’re standing under the Colosseum, imagining gladiators and roaring crowds.
Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s a bit chaotic. But that’s part of its charm. Rome is bold, beautiful, and full of life, a city you don’t just visit, butOne of my favorite spots in Rome is the Spanish Steps—Piazza di Spagna in Italian. It’s the perfect place to sit with a gelato, watch people go by, and relax in the heart of the city you immerse yourself into.
Whether you’re here for the history, the pasta, the art, or just the gelato (no judgment), Rome will leave its mark on you.
I’ll be sharing photos, favorite moments, and a few tips along the way. Stay tuned, as the Eternal City has a lot to say. We’ve already visited the Colosseum. Here is a Photoblog of some of my other favorite places in Rome:
The Spanish Steps! One of my favorite spots in Rome is the Spanish Steps, the Piazza di Spagna in Italian. It’s the perfect place to sit with a gelato, watch people go by, and relax in the heart of the city.
The Sistine Chapel: The Sistine Chapel is where Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes and The Last Judgment take center stage, awe‑inspiring images telling stories on every wall. Just remember to book ahead and keep your voice down, or you may get scolded! This is an art‑lover’s must‑see and not to be missed.
The Vatican: The Vatican is its own tiny city‑state tucked inside Rome, home to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and a treasure trove of art and history. Wandering its quiet courtyards and marbled halls feels like stepping into another world, where every corner holds centuries of faith and creativity.
St. Peter’s Basilica: St. Peter’s Basilica is the enormous church at the heart of the Vatican, its iconic dome shaping Rome’s skyline. Inside, the vast space and soaring columns leave you in awe. If you’re up for it, climb into the dome for one of the best views over the city. It’s totally worth the steps, or so I’m told.

And one last glance back as we say good-bye.
Here are a few handy tips to make the most of your time in Rome:
- Beat the crowds: Visit top sights first thing in the morning or late afternoon—you’ll enjoy shorter lines and softer light for photos.
- Skip the line: Book tickets online ahead of time for the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and other popular spots to save hours waiting.
- Dress for churches: Shoulders and knees need to be covered to enter basilicas. Keep a light scarf or shawl tucked in your bag.
- Stay aware of pick‑pockets: Busy areas and crowded buses are hotspots. Carry your wallet in a front pocket or a zipped bag.
- Explore side streets for food: Wander a block or two off the main piazzas for authentic, budget‑friendly trattorias.
- Learn a few phrases: A simple “per favore” and “grazie” goes a long way with locals.
- Take it slow: Build in gelato breaks, espresso pit‑stops, or just time to sit in a piazza. Rome really is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace.
